- A modem is not necessarily required. Most cable systems, in the U.S. and
- several other countries have reverse channel capability which they
- could receive information back from the user on. It's just that they
- have never been used before. Many cable companies are currently
- installing amplifiers for the reverse channel and characterizing their
- performance in an attempt to compete with the phone companies. It will
- be interesting to see how this all shakes out. I imagine the first
- interactive boxes will use the phone lines because they are already
- operating and available.
